Jewish Kamianets tourist guide presented at conference in Medzhybizh

On 27 August, as part of the International Academic Conference “Jewish Communities of Ukraine in the Late Medieval and Early Modern Periods”, a presentation of the tourist guide Jewish Kamianets was held in Medzhybizh, Khmelnytskyi region. The publication is the fourth volume in the Kamianets – Historical and Tourist Route series, which explores the heritage of the main communities that have shaped the city’s history.
The guide was written by:
- Yevhenii Levinzon, Executive Director of the International Interdisciplinary Certificate Program in Jewish Studies and author of numerous scholarly publications on the Jewish heritage of Podillia;
- Hanna Kivilsha, an independent researcher who has been studying the Jewish heritage of Kamianets-Podilskyi and the surrounding region for more than 30 years.
During the presentation, the authors’ colleagues, scholars and friends shared their impressions of the new publication.
“A tourist guide like this, which brings together such a concentrated body of information, is an extremely valuable publication both for residents and visitors to Kamianets-Podilskyi and for researchers far beyond Ukraine. Creating this kind of publication is not an easy task, even though it may seem like a concise and comprehensive genre. It is always extremely difficult to convey and fit such a vast and multifaceted history into a single publication. That is why this example is so valuable, and I would like to see it inspire similar publications in other cities. This guidebook deserves to reach a much wider audience,” said Taisiia Sydorchuk, PhD in History, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Head of the Omeljan Pritsak Research Center for Oriental Studies.
On 8 July, the first public presentation of the tourist guide Jewish Kamianets took place at the Kamianets-Podilskyi Town Hall.
The guide presents 18 sites of Jewish heritage in Kamianets-Podilskyi, highlighting the rich history of what was once one of the largest Jewish communities in Podillia. The publication is based on extensive archival research and offers readers a deeper understanding of the city’s Jewish past.
The tourist guide Jewish Kamianets was published with the participation of the International Interdisciplinary Certificate Program in Jewish Studies and with the support of the Department for Organization and Connection with Israelis Abroad of the World Zionist Organization and the Zionist Federation of Ukraine.
