- February 1, 2025
As part of the International Interdisciplinary Certificate Program in Jewish Studies, this workshop is being led by Dr. Kateryna Malakhova, academic director and lecturer of the program. It’s an addition to Alexandra Fishel’s course.
The first session took place on February 17, and the students will be meeting every two weeks.
The lecturers chose Horodenka old Jewish cemetery because it was recently visited by the students during a seminar.
“A group of students studying Jewish cemeteries will spend three months working with photographs of the tombstones from the Horodenka old Jewish cemetery. They will learn to decipher, translate, and analyze epitaphs.
The cemetery is tentatively dated from the early 18th to mid-19th century, and it has not been explored before. It’s also significant because the community buried there was likely connected to Nachman of Horodenka, a student of the Baal Shem Tov and the grandfather of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. So, we’re looking forward to some interesting discoveries!” says Dr. Kateryna Malakhova, academic director of the program.
- In September 2024, a seminar on the preservation and protection of Jewish cemeteries was held in Ivano-Frankivsk region. You can read more about it here.
